Surgeries we rehab

If an orthopedic surgeon fixed it, we can help you rebuild it

Surgery is the easy part for the patient. You are asleep for it. The weeks that follow are where the result gets decided, and that is where we come in. Stiffness, swelling, a leg that will not straighten, a shoulder you are scared to lift. We have seen all of it, many times over, and we know what normal looks like at week two, week six and month four.

Many of our post op patients had their surgery in San Antonio and would rather not drive back into the city three times a week for rehab. You do not have to. Your surgeon sends the protocol, we follow it, and we keep their office updated as you hit each milestone.

How recovery goes

Four phases, timed to how tissue actually heals

Protect

Control swelling and pain, protect the repair, and start the gentle motion your surgeon allows. Small wins matter here, like straightening the knee all the way.

Restore motion

Hands on manual therapy and guided exercise to get your range back before scar tissue decides it for you.

Rebuild strength

Progressive loading in our rehab gym until the surgical side can keep up with the other one. Stairs, squats, reaching overhead, carrying groceries.

Back to life

Work, sport, grandkids, the garden. Athletes finish with return to play testing in our clinic before they are released.

Book before your surgery date

The best time to call us is before you go under. A few things that help:

  • Schedule your first visit for the week your surgeon wants you started
  • Ask the surgeon's office to send us the protocol and prescription
  • Bring your discharge papers and any brace or sling to the first visit
  • Plan on two or three visits a week at the start
After discharge

Your visits end. Your recovery does not have to.

Joint replacements keep improving for months after formal therapy ends. Keep training in our gym with our team watching through the Supervised Exercise Program.

Post surgical rehab questions

How soon after surgery should I start physical therapy?

Usually within the first week or two, but your surgeon sets the start date. Joint replacement patients often start within days. Call us before your surgery so the first visit is already on the calendar.

Can you work with my surgeon in San Antonio?

Yes. Many of our post surgical patients had surgery in San Antonio. We follow the protocol your surgeon sends and keep their office updated on your progress.

How long does rehab take after a knee or hip replacement?

Most people are in formal physical therapy for about two to three months, with strength still improving for months after. Your evaluation will give you a realistic timeline for your surgery and your goals.

Will rehab hurt?

Some discomfort is normal, especially early, and we will be honest when a stretch is going to be uncomfortable. Sharp or lingering pain is a signal to change the plan, not to push through it.

Have a surgery date coming up?

Call now and we will have your first rehab visit on the calendar before you leave the hospital.
